A court in Pennsylvania recently upheld a 20 million dollar award to a family whose member died after liposuction performed by a board certified plastic surgeon. The procedure was performed under anesthesia with a nurse anesthetist. Fat was suctioned from the neck and abdomen.

Liposuction is most safely performed with tumescent anesthesia, and not with general anesthesia. Any procedure with general anesthesia has higher inherent risks. Modern liposuction can be done safely with mild to no sedation with tumescent techniques, as popularized by Dr. Klein, a California dermatologist. Liposuction with a board certified plastic surgeon does not ensure safety.

There's really quite a risk in the procedure but as long as the surgeon is doing it right then it won't be a problem.

It is unfortunate that these incidents occur in the industry but complications do come up from time to time during the procedure.

It scares me to think that plastic surgery can really kill you. Makes me think twice about ever getting one. :(

It scares me to think about getting any type of surgery. But I guess when you need it (enough). I would consider a nice head of hair... :)

For me lipsouction would be a last resort after gym and excersise but then again if you're going to go at least go to a professional
